Apple and its Green Side – The World’s Best IT Companies according to Greenpeace

The Internet has grown heavily from all points of view during past years and, consequently, it needs a lot of energy. Its footprint raises every day more. According to those reasons, Greenpeace is calling on major Internet companies to lead the way in renewable power and, for example, both Apple and Facebook committed to 100 percent renewable energy, causing major investments in wind and solar energy. You can check out their latest 2015 Click Clean Report to find out “which other major companies are leading the way or falling behind in the race to build a greener online, so that we can all have a greener offline”.

The grade for each company goes from A (the best) to F (the worst) according to four different indicators:

  • Energy transparency – Scope and level of detail made publicly available on energy consumption of IT infrastructure.
  • Renewable energy commitment and infrastructure siting – Commitment to powering their data centers with renewable energy, including infrastructure siting criteria and investment decisions to increase clean energy use.
  • Energy efficiency and mitigation strategy – Strategies and measurable progress to mitigate the demand for dirty energy generated by IT infrastructure.
  • Renewable energy use and advocacy – Measurable progress and commitment to renewable energy investments and advocacy for ambitious policies that encourage wide scale renewable energy generation and use.

All categories in which Apple received an A, and it was the only technology company with a perfect scorecard in the report. It continues to set the bar among technology companies for its commitment to running its worldwide operations on renewable energy, topping Amazon, Facebook, Google, HP, IBM, Microsoft, Oracle, Yahoo and other large corporations. In the report is written: “Apple continues to be the most aggressive in powering its data center operations with renewable energy. Despite continued rapid growth, Apple appears to have kept pace with its supply of renewable energy, maintaining its claim of a 100% renewably powered cloud for another year, followed by Yahoo, Facebook and Google with 73%, 49% and 46% clean energy respectively. Greenpeace found that Amazon’s current investments would deliver an energy mix of 23% renewable energy for its operations”.

Greenpeace’s full-length 2015 Click Clean Report offers in-depth information about environmental initiatives that Apple and other technology companies have been undertaking, renewable energy for the cloud, powering data centers with renewable energy, a road map to a green internet and more.
